Is AI Already a Top 10 Most Impactful Innovation?

Alan Turing, the father of AI, on the list of history's great innovations
Alan Turing Ponders AI's Place Among Other Great Innovations

If Alan Turing were alive to comment on this list of the top 10 most impactful innovations, I am confident he would feel a sense of pride seeing AI (artificial intelligence) finally come of age.  He is widely regarded as the father of AI due to his pioneering work in theoretical computer science and his visionary ideas about machine intelligence. In his seminal 1950 paper, “Computing Machinery and Intelligence,” Turing introduced the concept of the "Turing Test", a framework for evaluating a machine’s ability to exhibit intelligent behavior indistinguishable from that of a human.

He might be a little disappointed that AI is not already on my list. Here’s my list of the top 10 most impactful innovations (ever). They made the list because of their transformative impact on industries, economies, and societies throughout history.

Where Does AI Rank Now?

If you are reading this blog post, you probably already have an opinion on this.

Artificial Intelligence (Mid-20th and 21st centuries)

  • Contributors: Multiple (Alan Turing, John McCarthy, and others)

  • Impact: AI is already transforming nearly every industry by automating tasks, enhancing decision making, and enabling entirely new business models. It is driving advancements in robotics, healthcare, finance, and autonomous vehicles, and it’s expected to play an even larger role in future economies.

I've been thinking quite a bit about AI recently, the fascinating history, and powerful ability to improve how humans make decisions.

It's not too difficult to make an argument that AI has already made enough of an impact to be on any top 10 list already. Do you agree it belongs on this list already? If not, will AI deserve to be on this list by 2025? It’s fun to predict where it will be in 2050?  Will it reach the top 3 or even #1 at some point?

Top 10 Most Impactful Innovations:

1. The Printing Press (1440s)

  • Inventor: Johannes Gutenberg

  • Impact: Revolutionized communication and the spread of knowledge, making books and information widely accessible. It paved the way for the Renaissance, Reformation, the Scientific Revolution, and the Age of Enlightenment.

2. The Steam Engine (late 17th century)

  • Inventors: Thomas Savery, Thomas Newcomen, James Watt (improvements)

  • Impact: Powered the Industrial Revolution by enabling mechanized factories, steam-powered trains, and ships. It transformed transportation, manufacturing, and agriculture, fundamentally changing economies.

3. Electricity (18th and 19th centuries)

4. The Telephone (1876)

  • Inventor: Alexander Graham Bell

  • Impact: Transformed communication by enabling real-time voice conversations across distances, disrupting postal and telegraph systems, and eventually leading to the development of modern communication networks like the internet and mobile phones.

5. The Automobile (late 19th and 20th centuries)

  • Inventors: Karl Benz, Henry Ford (mass production)

  • Impact: The automobile changed transportation by making personal mobility widespread. It reshaped industries like manufacturing, oil, and urban planning and transformed how goods and people move, contributing to suburbanization and global supply chains.

6. The Airplane (1903)

7. The Computer (Mid-20th century)

  • Inventors: Alan Turing, John von Neumann, Charles Babbage, and others

  • Impact: The development of computers radically transformed industries, enabling digitalization, automation, and the information age. Computers are now foundational to nearly every modern industry, from finance to entertainment.

8. The Internet (1960s / 1990s)

  • Inventors: Multiple contributors (ARPANET, Tim Berners-Lee for the World Wide Web)

  • Impact: The internet disrupted communication, commerce, and information-sharing globally. It enabled e-commerce, social media, cloud computing, and digital economies, fundamentally changing business, culture, and daily life.

9. Antibiotics (1928)

  • Inventor: Alexander Fleming (discovered penicillin)

  • Impact: Antibiotics revolutionized medicine by treating bacterial infections that were previously often fatal. It transformed healthcare, increased life expectancy, and led to significant advancements in medical science and public health.

10. Nuclear Energy (Mid-20th Century)

  • Inventors: Enrico Fermi, J. Robert Oppenheimer, Lise Meitner and Otto Hahn, multiple scientists and engineers.

  • Impact: Similar to electricity and the steam engine, nuclear energy has transformed energy production, medical science, and geopolitical landscapes. Its dual-use nature for both civilian and military purposes underscores its significant impact.

Honorable Mentions:

The Light Bulb (1879):

Revolutionized lighting and expanded productivity hours.

Vaccination (1796):

Changed public health and eradicated diseases like smallpox.

The Personal Computer (1970s-1980s):

Made computing accessible to the masses, driving the tech revolution.

Semiconductor (starting 1874) / Transistor (1947):

Made modern electronics, including computers and smartphones, possible.

Cameras and Film (Early 19th Century – Present):

Still plays a crucial role in technology innovations, particularly in digital imaging as well as shaping modern society (in cultural, artistic, and media contexts).

All of these inventions are considered disruptive because they fundamentally changed existing systems, created new industries, or reshaped societal behavior, impacting millions of lives and setting the stage for further innovations.

Predicting AI’s Place in History

As we look towards the future, the question arises: Where will Artificial Intelligence rank among the top 10 most impactful innovations by 2050? Given its current trajectory and the magnitude of its potential impact, AI could very well ascend to the top of this list.

However, predicting its exact placement involves considering several factors.

Factors Influencing AI’s Ranking

  • Technological Advancements: Continued breakthroughs in machine learning, natural language processing, and neural networks will enhance AI’s capabilities.

  • Economic Influence: AI-driven efficiencies and innovations can significantly boost economic growth and create new industries.

  • Societal Integration: The extent to which AI is embedded in daily life, from smart homes to personalized healthcare, will determine its overall impact.

  • Ethical and Regulatory Frameworks: Addressing ethical concerns and implementing robust regulations will shape AI’s development and public acceptance.

  • Global Adoption: The widespread adoption of AI across different regions and industries will amplify its global impact.
